Corey's Guide on Getting out of Matras

Starting a game

First thing is first. You have probably already picked a race, but if you have chosen the following: Rasvim, Seiry or Derth, then I recommend you choose again. The reason being that Rasvims are for experienced players and if you don't know how to use them properely, then you could end up ruining your whole game. Derths, on the other hand aren't very useful if you are planning on getting the expansions, as most of the enemies in the expansions are completely resistant to magic. As for Seirys, they aren't that good at handling their weaponry or armour. So for these reasons, I recommend you pick either an Etherim or a Nogur, as both these races are very strong throughout the game.

If you pick an Etherim, make sure you choose Environment Magic as one of their skills, as this will come in handy throughout the game.

Statistics info

Before you start playing, you need to know what the five main attributes govern. Everytime you level up, you will get five points with which to increase your attributes. Below is what skills come under each attribute:
STRENGTH: Heavy Weapon, also this stat will increase your base strength.
DEXTERITY: Light Weapon, Light Armour, Dual Wield, Accuracy, Stealth, Lockpick, Block, Repair.
ENDURANCE: Heavy Armour, also this stat will increase your base HP(Hit points)/Unholy HP.
INTELLIGENCE: Heal Magic, Undead Magic, Attack Magic, Protect Magic, Environment Magic, Alchemy, Disarm, also this stat will increase your base SP (Spell Points).
PERSONALITY: Persuade, Mercantile, Mind Magic.

Getting your first quest

Once you finish speaking to Bryl, head to the centre of Matras where the water fountain is. Tap the fountain to get a free item of water. Then, facing North, head up past the fountain towards the inn. Once you are on the path just outside the inn, head along the path that goes west until there are two houses on either side of you. Enter the house on your right first and talk to the Mayor of Matras about the sickness. Once you have done this, say goodbye and head over to the inn and go inside. Talk to the innkeeper about the sickness. He will tell you that it comes from a hole in the graveyard, and that he has now put a ladder down there.

Always check your map to see where you are, and where you need to be.

Completing your first quest

Okay, so you have the Matras Infection quest but aren't sure what to do or where to go. First of all, go to the alchemist's shop in the town centre. Buy at least two small healing potions from him. Next, look for the Matras Cemetary on your map. (Once you tap on the map screen, enlarge it with the button on the right of the map, the one above the red 'X'). On the map, your position will be marked with a red flag. Tap on the space that is one space west of your flag. It should read 'Matras cemetary'. So go back to the town centre and head west until you get to the cemetary. Save the game before you enter the cemetary. Once you have entered, kill the two skeletons that will attack you. If you run too low on health, tap the potion icon on your screen and drink a small healing potion (you get one of these automatically when you start the game). Once you have killed the two skeletons, look for a hole in the cemetary with a ladder leading down it and climb down. Once inside, there will be a venom bat that will attack you. Kill it, then look around the cavern you are in for a little grey bottle on the ground to heal the poison you will most likely be affected with. Tap on the potion icon and drink the cure poison potion (only if you are poisoned). Then head down one of the two side tunnels if you are faced with a spider web, then you are in the wrong tunnel, turn back. Once you find the end of the tunnel with the noxious bubbles in it, whack the bubbles with your weapon, or, if you have a bow you will need to cast 'burning hand' on it, or hit it with your short sword. Once the tunnel collapses, save the game. Head back to the other tunnel I mentioned with the spiderweb in it. hit the spiderweb and kill the skeletons behind it. Continue down the tunnel and tap the book to get it. If you aren't undead, this book will be useless to you. Head left and tap the shelf with the skull on it. Collect the skull by tapping the dark green 'up' button. Then head back out of the cemetary, going back to Matras. Once in the town centre, talck to the innkeeper about the sickness again to claim a reward. Then head back to the Mayor's house and talk to him about the sickness. He will tell you to come back tomorrow. Once the next day arrives, he will reward you after a few hours. Congratulations! You have now finished your first quest.

Finding out the smuggling operations in Matras

First of all, you may buy any new equipment that you may need to defeat this next monster (he is a tough one).

Once you have bought your new armour/weaponry/spells, save the game.

Always save your game, but only if you are in a safe place with lots of health.

It helps to keep two save files (one for where you are at, and one in a safe spot).

Now, head back to the hole in the cemetery. Once inside, head back down the passage to where you got the skull. Turn around and head down to the grave and save your game. Next, tap the grave and you will get a message saying that you feel a cold breeze on your neck. Turn around and kill the ghoul behind you. Once you have done this, you will notice that there is a small passage to your right. Go into this little passage and look around it for a dark brown coloured brick (these are scattered throughout the game and often reveal hidden passages). Walk down the hidden passage you have created and you will find a storeroom, which you will realise is full of illegal stuff. Tap each one of the barrels to get an item out of it.

You must tap the barrels when they are slightly to your right, otherwise it will not work.

Once you exit through the door, you will come out into Matras Port Quarter. Head back to the north of Matras to speak with the Mayor about smuggled goods and tell him that the smugglers use the storeroom (or whatever it’s called). You have now completed the Smuggling quest.

Getting back the Lord’s wife

You will get a counter offer for this quest from the robber leader, in which you will get a better reward.

Go and talk to the Lord of Matras (his house is the one opposite the Mayor’s. He will ask you to go and get his wife back from the robber leader in the Robber Forest.

If you have the spells Mark and Recall, use mark in the centre of Matras (where the fountain is).

After Marking your spot (or not) check your map to see where the robber forest is (if you can’t find it, it’s just below the Forest of the Seiry, which is right below Matras). Once you have found it, head down to the robber forest until you find three buildings. There will be a path in between them. Follow the path down into the forest of blood, where there will be a man named Drann. Talk to him and say that you trust him and take the mission. Then, head back up the path to the three buildings. Once there go into the one at the top, and you will be confronted by Oskane the Robber Leader, who will give you a counter offer. Once he does this, say you were already at the Lord’s place, and tell him that the Lord wants his wife back. You will then be offered $1000 and ‘something special’ which is the Robber Leader’s Bow, which is a good bow for you if you are skilled in ranged weaponry, or which sells for roughly $1200.

If you decline Oskane’s counter-offer, there will be a bunch of Highwaymen, Outlaws and Muggers ready to kill you, so if you are of a higher level, you may decline Oskane’s offer and kill the men outside.

Now you are faced with a dilemma, you must either get the ransom money from the Lord and give it to Oskane, OR; you have the option of getting the Lord’s wife back for him. Part A will explain what to do if you want to help Oskane and Part B will explain what to do to get the Lord’s wife back for him. I recommend that you choose to collect the Ransom from the Lord and give it to Oskane, because that way if you keep the bow, you have a good weapon whereas if you sell it, you will end up with $2200 total.

PART A: So you’ve chosen to help the robber leader. This is where the spell ‘Recall’ comes in handy. But first, mark this spot if you have the spell Mark. If you have Recall, use it to recall your position in Matras (it will teleport you back there). If you don’t have Recall, you will have to travel back there on foot.
Once back in Matras, go to the Lord’s house and ask for the ransom. Once you get the $2000 off him you will have committed a crime. Now, once again, if you have Recall, use it to get back to the Robber Forest, or if not, travel back there yourself. Before you leave Matras, a guard will stop you telling you that you have broken the law. My advice is that you just pay the fine and get on with your quest. However, if you choose to go to jail, to get out you must pace back and forth until your time is up, at which point two of your stats will decrease. Alternatively, you can lock pick your way out but when you leave your cell, you will have committed another crime so I recommend that you just pay the fine.
ANYWAY, once in the Robber Forest, talk to Oskane and he will give you your reward, and you will have finished the Ransom Money quest.

PART B: If you want to get the Lord’s wife back, you must talk to her (she is in one of the three houses in Robber Forest). She will tell you she doesn’t want to be rescued. Go back to Matras and tell the Lord about this, and he will give you an alcoholic drink to give to her. Travel back to the Robber Forest and give her the drink, then tell her to come home. She will agree. Then, head back to Matras and enter the Lord’s house for your reward. You will now have finished the ‘Get the Lord’s wife back’ quest.

Finding the Agent Recruiter’s boy

To get this quest, go to the house that is in the north west of Matras (near the Mayor’s and Lord’s houses). He will tell you to go and find Onin the Fisher boy (the boy in brown clothes). Look on your map to find the Abandoned Swamp. Head over there and you will find Onin. When Onin tells you to find a girl instead, say no, you want him. If you have a good persuade level he will come with you but if you don’t, he will ask for $200 to go with you.

Onin will only be there during the daytime.

Talk to him and he will tell you to find his brother. His brother Anan is in Wolfcreek, just north of Matras, and is wearing purple clothes. Once you find him, he will tell you a code to tell Onin. Go back to Onin and tell him what Anan said. Once you have done this he will go with you to the Agent Recruiter. Go to the Agent Recruiter’s house in the north west of Matras to claim your reward.

Finding the hunters for Thurm and getting a healing potion from Nadia’s Father

You cannot find Nadia’s Father in his house, because he has been captured by the Amazon Archers.

Once you have these quests from Thurm and his wife Nadia in the peninsula, on the northernmost point on the map, head down to the river of Brendan (below the Abandoned Swamp). There you will find a hole in the ground. Enter it, and you will be in the cave of the Amazon Archers.

Do not touch the green fountain, as it is POISONOUS

Remember to save regularly

Once inside, go straight up to the Amazon Queen. Talk to her and say that you came for the farmer. She will then try to kill you along with the two archer guards that accompany her. After you have killed them all take the key that the Queen drops and use it to unlock the wooden storeroom door. Grab all the items, including the cell key, and head on over to the farmer’s cell, opposite the storeroom. Say you came to rescue him, then leave. Once back at the Peninsula, talk to Thurm and Nadia to claim your rewards.

Finding Marisola’s Hand Mirror

This quest is an easy one. Enter the hollow tree in Wolfcreek, and then look around inside it for a little girl named Marisola. She will ask you to find her hand mirror once you talk to her. The hand mirror is located in a puddle of water in the cave. To get the mirror, simply tap the puddle. Once you have done this, give the mirror back to Marisola, who will reward you with a necklace and another quest.

Getting rid of the orc at The Pagoda

To find The Pagoda, head out of Matras on the path that takes you south. Once at The Pagoda, you will see an orc there called Osman, who is blocking your way. To get rid of him, talk to him, and you will find that he gives you two options. The first is that you can give him the $500 that he asks for (I recommend this one), or, you can find his Idol. I don’t know where the Idol is exactly but I will update this guide when I find out. Once you have gotten rid of Osman, go back to the Peninsula and talk to Nadia to get a reward.

Finding the Shaman’s three skulls

If you have followed this guide from the start, you will know that Drann has tasked you to find out what is going on down inside the pit in Blood Forest (just south of Robber Forest). Once down there, go through the only place that is open and talk to the Shaman, Oyo. He will tell you to look in the mirrors. Once you have looked in all four, report back to him and he will task you with finding his three skulls. I will go through these in step-by-step instructions.

The skull of Saint Seyna

If you have followed this guide from the top, then you should already have the skull of Saint Seyna, but in case you don’t, it’s in the tomb down in the cemetery.

The skull of Blood

This skull is down in the pit of blood, which is through one of the other two gates in the dungeon. Head down the stairs and kill the Cyclops to get this skull.

The skull of the Ogre Leader

To get this skull, you must head back to Matras and find Ichi the Pawnbroker. His shop is in the Port Quarter, right next to the little river. He will ask for $500 and a Book of Fire. Go back to Oyo the Shaman in the Dungeon of Blood and get the Book of Fire from him. Go back to Ichi the Pawnbroker and give him the book and $500 and you will receive the final skull. Return once again to Oyo the Shaman for your reward.

Leaving Matras

So you’ve finished all of the main quests in Matras now and you’ll want to be getting on to the next town. Simply follow the path south out of Matras, continue past The Pagoda, and eventually you will get to the next town called Vastares. Hope my guide has helped you on your way to getting further into the game! Good luck and happy questing!

Burgle For Mayana

Burgle the innkeeper's back room at night and bring half of the loot to Mayana the streetwalker in Matras. You only have one day for finishing this quest.

Difficulty: Easy
Length: Very Short
Possible Paths: 2
Recomended Level: 1+

Image
The starting location of the quest

To start this quest you must talk to the streetwalker Mayana who is at the port of Matras. Ask her about the smuggling and she will say she will tell you more when you have commited a crime. Exit the convosation and attack her once. Talk to Mayana again and ask her about the offer.

When you ask her about the offer and she tells you of her plan, you have the option of saying that you don't want to help. DO NOT select this if you want to complete the quest. If you select this option you will get a fame increase but you will not be able to start the quest.

Step 1 - Mayana's Plan)

She will ask you to rob the innkeeper as he treated her badly. She will give you 24 game hours to bring back her half of the stolen gold. Which she thinks will be 500G. Walk to the north of Mastras to the Inn. If it is still day then enter the inn and sleep. When it is night walk around to the back of the inn. There will be two windows, one lit up and one not. Face the window that is not lit and attack it with a weapon or your bare hands. You will receive 800G and various food items.

Step 2 - Bringing the loot to Mayana)

Head back to Mayana and talk to her. You have two paths:

Path 1 - Giving Mayana less then half)
When you speak to Mayana, you will have the option to give her 250G or 400G. If you give her 250G she will thank you and you will have completed the quest!

Path 2 - Giving Mayana Half)
(Note - As Mayana clears your crime records when you select this option you may try stealing from more buildings such as the Mayors house. Do not spend too much time doing this due to the quests time limit)

If you choose to be generous and give her half of the coins, she will be very gratefull that you were honest and clear your crime records for you, this is the only bonus of choosing this more expensive option. Quest complete!

Reward
400G (Path 1) / 550G (Path 2)
5x Meat
5x Bread
5X Black Beer Potion.

Matras Infection

Save Matras from the infection that comes from the cemetery. Talk with the innkeeper and with the alchemist of the village to find out more. After finishing your quest go back to the Mayor and to the innkeeper.

Difficulty: Easy
Length: Short
Possible Paths: 1
Recomended Level: 1+

Image
The starting location of the quest

To start the quest talk to the Mayor of Matras. He is located in the house showen in the map to the left.

Step 1 - Gathering infomation)

The Mayor will tell you that a horrible smell is coming from the cemetery and he will reward you if you can remove it. When you have received the quest, also talk to the innkeeper. He will tell you that he will reward you if you can remove the smell too. After this, talk to the alchemist (The owner of the shop with the pot icon). He will tell you that a fire related spell could destroy the source of the smell. This is true but also any form of normal attack will destroy the source too.

Step 2 - The Cemetery and The Crypt)

Leave Matras via the west exit, which can also be seen on the map to the left by the sign post icon. When you enter the cemetry for the first time two skeletons will attack you. These are weak monsters and should be quite easy to defeat. They will drop nothing. Walk to the west side of the cemetery and you will find a hole which leads to the Ruined Crypt.

Step 3 - Removing the source and finishing up)

In the crypt, attack the web to break through it. Beware of venom bats, low levels can easily be killed by poison. Head to the north of the cave and into a little tunnel. Here you will find green bubbles on the ground, this is the source of the smell. You can destroy the source by simply attacking the bubbles with your weapon or bare hands or by casting the spell ''Burning Hand'. When you hit the bubbles, rocks will appear and you will receive a message that the tunnel has collapsed. Exit the crypt and return to Mastras. Talk to the Mayor and tell him you have removed the source of the smell. He will tell you that he will belive you when the smell is gone and to come back a day later. Return 24 game hours later and talk to The Mayor and you will have completed the quest. Remember to also speak to the innkeeper after you have completed the quest to recieve his reward too.

500G
Fame Increase

From The Innkeeper:
250G
3 Potions of Black Beer

Ruined Crypt - Dungeon Walkthrough

Overview

Starting Location: Cemetery of Matras
Difficulty: Easy*
Length: Short
Recomended Level: 2-3
Recomended Items: Resist Poison / Cure Poison
Relevant Quests: Matras Infection

This will be the first dungeon your new character will explore that is directly related to a Quest obtained earlier. The Ruined Crypt will present you with some interesint challenges as well as some rewarding secrets when uncovered.

Preparation

The dungeon itself is not overtly complex, but you might feel daring enough to try it at a lower level than recomended. To ensure a higher survival rate, you should make sure to be well stocked in potions as well as having means to resist or cure poison, and defending yourself with the Shield spell. It is very likely that your character will be with little to no armor, so do your best to outfit yourself with the best AC value armor pieces you can. Some of the monsters will hit fairly hard.

Walkthrough

Image
Ruined Crypt

Image
Cemetery of Matras

Finding the entrance to the Ruined Crypt will be easy enough. Simply exit the Matras to the west, and walk into the cemetery. Two Skeletons will wait for you there if you walked into the cemetery for the first time, but they should be no problem to dipatch.

The entrance itself is as the far wall of the cemetery, but you will not be able to go in as there is no ladder in the opening. You will have to talk to the Mayor of Matras to get the Matras Infection quest. You will then talk to the innkeeper and the alchemist, and they will graciously have a ladder ready for you.

Image
Ruined Crypt

You will come across a wall of webs as you start the dungeon. Simply attack it to be able to continue. Two bats will be waiting for you on the other side, so go ahead and smash them to go into the main room.

There are some mushrooms to be found in this room, but more important than that will be a Cure poison potion along the southern wall. Grab the potion and turn to the northern tunnel where a Venom Bat will charge you. Dring the potion after you defeat the monster if you got poisoned. Do not drink it mid battle as it will likely get wasted.

You will find a bubbling pool of nastiness at the end of the north tunnel. This is the place you are looking for to complete the Matras Infection quest. You may step into it to get a clue as to what to do next. Reffer to the quest guide for more details.

Once that is taken care of, go back into the main room and move into the eastern tunnel where you will come across another web. Unlike the first, this web is holding back some tough oponents if you went into the dungeon at level 1. Once you break it, you will be attacked by a single Skeleton and a couple of Stone Skeletons. Putting on a Shield spell before breaking the web might be a good idea.

Keep trucking along the tunnel after you kill the skellies. You will come across a Primary Contagion skillbook, which will do you no good if you are not undead. There is also a shelf to the left of the book that has the Skull of Saint Seyna. This is a quest item for the Shaman's Three Skulls quest, so just hang on to it and continue east.

You will quickly see a coffin at the far east wall. DO NOT TAP IT! A nasty Ghoul will pop out of the coffin to kick you around like a rag doll. This is the "boss" of the dungeon and is the likely the strongest monster you have come across at this point, but it is completely optional so you may ignore him if you like. Tap the coffin only if you feel confident that your character can tackle a potent foe, just remember to save before touching the coffin.

South of the coffin you will see a blank wall, but you may want to pay close attention to this section as there is a secret stone switch that will open the secret wall to the south. This will lead to a tunnel that ends in a secret Storehouse full of "illegal" goodies. Feel free to steal from the thieves then head out through the north exit to the Port of Matras.

Note that you will not be able to revisit the dungeon via this exit in the future.

Image
Secret Wall Switch

Congratulations!

You just cleared the Ruined Crypt.

You are not done, though. Turn left when you exit the Storehouse onto the Port. You will see that there is a ladder and a door. Tap on the ladder to receive even more goodies.
