How to rest without going to the inn?

Hey, really enjoying the game so far but have no idea how to pass hours in game without going to the inn and I don't have enough gold/it's 12am so I can't sell stuff at merchants to get enough gold. No matter where I go I can't seem to use the tent icon, thanks!
