Can you have two different characters on the go in your saved file ? Or only one at a time ?

Also, if I keep lava stuff in my house it seems to disappear ?

You can't have two different characters in the same save file, but if you use two (or more) different save slots, of course you can start the game with as many different characters as you want.

Put all stuff on your house's shelves - those are "persistent storage" shelves which means they can keep all stuff for you forever (including the lava ones of course).
