What's with all the sexism?

Postby niapet » Fri Aug 23, 2013 3:26 pm

This is a serious question. For the most part, this is an impressive game for a mobile platform; however there is constant sexism everywhere I turn. What is the point of this?

Please elaborate a bit. I haven't noticed anything more sexist than what one would expect to be said of women in those days. I mean a woman basically was the property of a man way back when. Not a good thing, just the way things were.

Okay, first of all.. Way back when? When there were orcs and goblins running around? When people could throw fireballs and lightning bolts?

I don't understand this desire to add in these elemrnts of sexism from earth's history. Where is the racism, the enslavement of non whites? All the other discpicable crap from history?

Fantasy is not historical fiction. If you have monsters and fireballs, it's not middle age earth... So why the rampant sexism? I says something distrubing about the fantasy geek mentality.

Honestly the game isn't sexist apart from the occasional word slip. Yes you can say that the world is not earth but obviously the world took some degree of inspiration from the middle ages of planet Earth, direct or indirect, as did most all fantasy games so that point is invalid. Slavery is a part of the game if you have played through, (not 100% sure if you mentioned that) and racism couldn't possibly be a part of the game because the races are as you said not of planet earth, they are fictional. How would it be racist except for having all Nogur or Siery as a slave race etc. But back to the point I don't see the game as sexist. As I said I can find a couple if examples but most of it is just chicks acting like whores (i.e "streetwalkers", the Vastares jeweler, amazon queen etc.). You could obviously find an example or more of sexism but I don't find it fair to single this game out for being sexist. Grand Theft Auto, now is a truly sexist game at parts.

So the game takes inspiration from "medieval" earth.. In what way other than technology exactly(and not even that)? The weapons are not even "medieval" but drawn from numerous eras. In fact NOTHING at all resembles "medieval" earth. I hear that a lot in defense of sexist fantasyworks, but invariable from folks who know nothing about actual history.

If we are leaving out racism based on color, the Black Plague and the Catholic Church why are we keeping sexism? Magic is added, monsters are added, technology from the renaissance and ancient world is added. It's a different planet and a plethora of other changes but we MUST keep sexism.. How else would it be authentic...

Please don't defend sexism in games based on such ridiculous, and fundamentally, flawed logic. If you like the sexism just admit it; but don't defend it based on "authenticity" since that argument hold abdolutly zero credulity.

In all honesty the game isn't sexist in the first place... As I said you may find an odd point or two, but it isn't overloaded with it. Maybe it's best if we agree to disagree.

We can suspend the discourse if you like. I assure you I am not trying to be adversarial, but rather think it is healthy to talk about these things. I don't see how hiding our heads in the sand, and refusing to contemplate other points of view, helps anyone. However, if you prefer, I'll let it be.

No I just think that neither of us will persuade te other to see the other's Point of View, and we could focus our energy on something more important than arguing about sexism in this game. I do remember now, back in Celtic Rift I believe, there seemed to be guys inside their houses talking about their "bitches" everywhere. I don't remember how often it was or if I just knocked on the wrong door. It was really only the houses of 1 city like this I believe. Maybe this is what you mean?

The creators have stated before. This is a mature game. Some of the slang that they say (for example-would you like to dip your wick?). Is all just stuff they came up with. If anything, the roles of the male/female are all nuts. Amazon Queens who will sleep with you then kill you afterwards, Lords that will do anything to get their wife back even though she doesn't want them. Yet he has no problem asking pcharacter to get her drunk just to get her back. He wont talk about his wife afterwards even though they have a shitty relationship.

Its a very mature game and the only thing I will say is that the game almost forces you to have at least a few skeletons in your closet. The chances of the main character doing all good are very slight. Its the big choices that matter I guess.

Ok first of all recruit17 might have just been racist
Second of all the idea behind the sexism is that it gives the game the feeling of being REAL in the Middle Ages(the era this was probably based off of) ther was a ton of sexism.
Last of all the wonderful thing about The Quest is that it can be played without having scelitons on your closet or you can have like 300. It's your choice, so of course it can be a little mature. That's one of the best parts about The Quest it's just mature enough to be rated teen but not like GTA/Witcher/Mortal combat.

I think you have a valid point. The sexism isn't so bad exactly, but i'm a female and thusly chose a female character. The game doesn't compensate for that. The dialogue with any of the characters about sex, male or female, is the same. (It's almost all female). They are kissing me, and more. I'd like male whore now and then thank you very much. And the old lady in the tower bedroom that is always there to pleasure me is just gross. Anyway, in that aspect, it's annoying.

I've played as both a male and a female and while I can't remember specific examples off the top of my head, I most definitely remember some differences in the dialogue throughout the game.

We tried in our expansions to be careful about that--I tried for example to use the word heroic one rather than hero or heroine--at least in the later expansions. And now redoing them for Steam, being extra careful but no male whores in Thor's Hammer--maybe in Luko I. : ) Why not? We can call him an Escort. I thought there was one in the official expansion but maybe I'm wrong. I think his name was Skar.

I do know there was no intention to be sexist. None at all. Just enjoy the gameplay and keep in mind there was no intention to be sexist. You can have romance in some of our expansions which is quite nice and you can even get married.
