I am looking for a in depth game to get my teeth into. However I have not really played a game like this before. The o my role playing games I have played is knights of the old republic and final fantasy VII both a long time ago. What is the best advice on what character to be, what I should spend my money on and what I should aim to improve about my character?

Also should I stick to the main game initially or also try the expansions and if so which are the best?

Once you finish the original game, you can continue with the expansions. As far as I see it the expansion opens a new location/s on the map where the story continues.

There are lots of guide and walk throughs out there.

Depending on your platform not all of the expansions are available. Android has the The Quest and Ice and Fire. IOS has those and one expansion. The PC version has everything but you have to play the old school version on the PC to access all the third party quests.

As far as the game goes it is a real open world game in that there is nothing other than death stopping you from going where you want. At the very start you will be dumped just outside a town and left to your own wondering. I love it about this game as most RPG literally push you along but this one is nearly like an open world that is living and breathing and there is no limits. Feels like Dagerfall where you wonder around trying to figure out what to do next.

I am loving this game and am 29 game days in and still have half the island to go plus still need to wonder around the first half as I have not looked everywhere.

I'm playing it on iOS and there seems to be lots of expansions, the three asteroid games, the Celtic games, the cursed stone, the jade dragon, the hordes of mithril, the hero of lukomorye and the lost archipelagos. Are these games expansions?

Yes they are expansions, but you must be playing on the old version to play them. However, they can all be played standalone. When you do this, you cannot import characters.

I highly recommend selecting Alchemy and Environmental Magic as primary skills whenever you start a new character because both of those skills will be EXTREMELY helpful throughout the entire game.

Like reddragon72 said, there is nothing directing you or holding your hand throughout this adventure. You can choose to stick to the main quest or venture off on TONS of side quests that really flesh out the world. Personally, I highly recommend doing the latter.

Save often!! This is the kind of game you can easily spend many hours on one play session without even noticing it, so if you end up dying without a recent save it could really dampen your drive to retrace all of that work you put in.

Also, on the topic of saving, be sure to save before you complete any quest because there are usually several different ways to actually complete most of them, and some outcomes are better than others. This is one of the things that I REALLY enjoy about this game because your decisions actually matter. Make too many poor decisions, and your fame will drop causing townspeople and guards to shun your very existence. On the other hand, though, some equipment requires that you have an evil alignment, so it's up to you to choose your own path.

As for spells, learn Mark and Recall as soon as possible. You can actually find both of them in the first town of Matras too! Another trick with saving, is to always save before entering any of the shops for the first time. Their inventory automatically resets every 24 hours (in game time), but you can speed this process up simply by saving, checking their inventory and reloading your game if you don't like what you see available. It's quick and easy, and definitely saves you a lot of time.

Also, as far as spells go, try to collect as many wands for different spells as possible. You can cast spells from wands without using any mana, and if you have the Recharge Wand spell you can simply fill it back up once it runs out. This can save your life!

Maybe I am being a bit thick (won't be a first or last!) but how do you set the primary skills as only remember selecting my race and whether a fighter, thief etc,

If you want to play pretty much all the available expansions, best you play The Quest GOLD. And NOT The HD version, as with that you can only play Ice and Fire expansion.

Selecting your primary skills is only done at the very beginning of the game when you select your race type, then you can go in and modify what skills you want and place them at the top as your primary. If you've already started playing you cant change them, you'll have to start all over again as you can change them while you've begun playing.

Yes, you are correct in that you cannot play the old expansions with the new HD version. Currently, only the official expansion "Islands of Ice and Fire" is available via HD. There are a lot of nice little tweaks in the HD version (besides the graphics), though, like the ability to place notes on the automap. That alone made me want to switch over. You also have the ability to add additional character portraits, and can transfer your game saves between the mobile and PC version if you want. They also nerfed all of the resistances in the HD version so that you cannot have anything higher than 80%. For instance, on the original version you could achieve 100% resistance to magic and be untouchable to even high level magic users. I feel this change really balances out the game nicely and keeps battles more interesting. Being all powerful gets pretty boring if you ask me.

You select your primary skills right from the first screen at character creation.

You don't have to select your class either. There are lots of predefined classes to select from, but you can make ANY kind of character you want (think Elder Scrolls). If you do select a predefined class, your primary skills will be selected for you automatically based on that class.

It's a matter of personal choice in the end, everyone has offered their opinions on this. I personally started with GOLD but then enjoyed the look of HD version and its many updated features so started playing that. Of course i cant go back now as ive finished HD version and now onto the Ice and Fire, but it would of been cool to try out the other expansions, but cant do it with HD saves. So if i want i'll have to start again. OR as they say you can simply enjoy the game as standalone with a new character if you want to at the very least see what the expansions are like.

So in the end its your choice. Do what you feel is best for you

Thanks everyone really appreciate your advice. I think I will stick with the HD and then do the expansions as a new character. Still muddling around the village of Matras messing up the early quests so don't think I have to worry yet!

So I think I officially suck at this game but determined to get stuck in. To try to get some money to increase my magic skills and get some better weapons and armour I have been going into the wild outside the village of mantras and killing as many archers as I can in the west. If I go east I'm getting killed by the outlaws and too far south the orcs come and for lack of a better phrase kick my arse! I'm trying to get enough money to get he magic experience in order to do the cemetery mission and use the burning hand. I feel I'm stagnating and hemormging money and skills and not getting any where. Advice on what to do to earn money and what to do to progress?

You actually don't need the burning hand spell to complete the cemetery quest. You can just hit it with your weapon. Also, if you need a quick 50 gold, you can play cards in the inn. I recommend the necromancer.

Yes for myself at the start of the game i play a %$##load of card games in the inn at 50 gold and yes the necromancer card deck is the best to use for making money. I dont recall/remember which character you're using. If you can share that maybe we can help you with the best strategy. I can suggest to no read the skill books till you have max out your learning from all the trainers out there, then you can read the books to get the best possible max skill set you can for your character.

I will start playing some cards! I am a Nogur and selected fighter. Where do I need to actually hit in the cemetery. I killed the skeletons, the poison bat (curing myself) and the goul and went to the bit with the gas and hit every wall but nothing seems to happen?

To tell the truth I can't remember really having money issues early in the game. I always started off by doing all of the quests in the first town, and that normally gets me set up pretty well. I would recommend starting off with the Dungeon of Blood or the Amazon Cave. Both of those dungeons have some good loot, and you could sell what you don't need for profit.
