hello im new in the quest world and id like some help.

Can anyone tell me how to train the mage in the earlie levels...im a little confused.

weapons light are usefull?armour light?

If you're fighting with staves, you want to max out Light Weapon. But you also want to up all the skills related to magic: Environment Magic, Protection Magic, Attack Magic, etc.

You might want to consider balancing using heavy armor and light armor because capes can be very useful. You have to experiment with that. Just my thoughts.
