i was told the possessor is on level 3 of the dungeon of the dead, but i don't know what that means - are there lower levels - I can't seem to find any.

It's not much help I know (sorry about that I never played the game) but yes, there are two more levels:
From Dungeon of the Dead you can descend into Maze of Souls and from that to Hell. Hope you find your way!

i figured it out - some of the wall tiles can be pressed in.
