What am I doing wrong.... This seems straightforward, but I just can't seem to solve this one.

There are two side entrances to the Dun of the Dead. There are switches on each side. You have to turn one switch down to activate the other and then turn the other switch down. The second switch once activated will pen the door.

Or are you having a different problem. He only can be seen at night.

I figured it out. I tried sleeping inside, but it didn't work. Went outside, waited, then went back in and all was fine. Not sure if that's a bug or just a feature.

I think it's a feature. One thing I've learned is that if you are trying to reset a level, you can't really do it within the same level, you need to do it outside that level. So maybe that's related to what you experienced.
