Can anyone explain how poison works? I just started my new file after redownloading the game. But I'm not sure if I can get rid of it without a potion or spell. It's awful. Any helpful hints for starting out?
It's been forever since I played. I can't remember a thing.

You need to use a spell to cure poison or a potion, both work fine.

Certain wells in the game can heal you and also take away the effects of poison. These are rare and found only in mithria grave yard and vastares graveyard, also in some dungeons, large palaces or houses and even in your house after you beat the game. Besides that the only way to cure poison is by potion or spell:p
